What is Gulab Jamun?

Gulab Jamun is one of the famous and known sweet dish of India. The soft and spongy small balls loaded with sugary sweetness is one of the favorite sweet dish of millions of people of India. You mostly found gulab jamun in weddings, parties, festivals, or during dinner time. Gulab Jamun is served after the meals to satisfy your sweet cravings and to complete your meal.

 

Origin of Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun means “rose fruit” that was brought into medieval India through Persia. The word ‘gulab’ was taken from the Persian word ‘gol’ and ‘ab’ that means flower and water that referred to as rose water. The word ‘jamun’ is a Hindi Urdu word of the Indian fruit dark purple berries that is of the same size and shape. So, this is how gulab jamun got its name and this sweet dessert invented.

 

About Gulab Jamun recipe

Gulab Jamun is prepared in two ways either with khoya or with milk powder. The khoya and milk solid are mixed with flour that is made in dough shape. After that, the round small balls are made and are fried well. The small balls after that dipped into a sugar syrup that is mixed with green cardamom, rose water, and saffron. This is how gulab jamun recipe is prepared. Let’s have a look at the step-by-step guide on how to make gulab jamun at home.

 

Recipe 1 ➢

Gulab Jamun Recipe with Milk Powder

Ingredients ⮞

  • Sugar – 2 cups
  • Water – 1cup
  • Saffron – 1 tablespoon
  • Lemon – 1 tablespoon
  • Milk-powder – 250gm
  • Ghee/Oil – 55gm
  • Baking soda – 1.7gm
  • 55-gram Maida
  • Chopped coconut/Nuts to garnish (optional)

 

How to prepare ⮞

A. How to prepare Sugar Syrup ➢

1. Firstly, in a pan take 2 cups of sugar

2. Then add 1 cup of water

3. After that add saffron – 1 tablespoon

4. Then add lemon – 1 tablespoon

5. Boil it in medium flame and stir it well until the sugar syrup became a little sticky you can check the consistency with the help of the spoon

6. Now turn off the gas and keep it aside.

B. How to prepare Jamun ➢

7. Now in a bowl take 250-gram milk powder.

8. In that add 55-gram Ghee/Butter.

9. Then add 1.7-gram Baking Soda and mix all the ingredients well.

10. Add 1 tablespoon of water and again mix for about 2-3 minutes.

11. After that put the mixture in a pan and for about 2 minutes cook it well.

12. Take out the mixture in a bowl and then add 55-gram Maida.

13. Mix it well and then make a dough to make 8-9 small round balls avoid making big ones because the size will automatically increase when you dip them in syrup.

14. After that take a pan and add ½ tablespoon of ghee/ oil in it heat it in a low flame now add a prepared ball in it and fry them well in medium or low flame don’t turn the flame high otherwise they will turn brown from outside and will remain uncooked from inside.

15. After some time, you will notice that balls change their color and will become light brown the size of the Jamun will also increase along with the color. If the jamuns will change to dark brown immediately then add some cold ghee to it this happens because the temperature of ghee is very hot.

16. Fry the balls properly for 6-7 minutes until they become golden brown.

17. When they fried well take them out in a napkin and let them cool for some time.

18. Now add the jamuns in a hot sugar syrup make sure the syrup is hot for the good texture of jamuns.

19. Put and soak jamuns in the syrup for 1-2 hours before serving. You will notice the size of the jamuns will increase than the original one.

20. Serve the jamuns either warm or chilled.

21. You can also garnish gulab jamun with either nuts or shredded(chopped) coconut.

Gulab Jamun Recipe with Khoya 

Ingredients ⮞

  • Sugar – 2 cups
  • Water – 1cup
  • Saffron – 1 tablespoon
  • Lemon – 1 tablespoon
  • Milk powder – 250gm
  • Ghee/Oil – 55gm
  • Baking soda – 1.7gm
  • Maida – 55gm
  • Chopped coconut/Nuts to garnish (optional)

How to prepare ⮞

A. How to prepare Sugar Syrup ➢

1. In a pan take 2 tablespoons of sugar.

2. After that add 3 cups of water.

3. Mix both of them well and cook in High flame stir in between so that the sugar mixed with water properly.

4. When water and sugar mixed properly then we will cook it on a medium flame for 7-8 minutes.

5. Now add ¼ tablespoon cardamom powder and mix it.

6. Remember to not make it too sticky only a little sticky.

7. Now turn off the gas and keep it aside.

 

B. How to prepare Jamun ➢

8. Now in a bowl take 250-gram Khoya and mash it.

9. Now add 3 tablespoons Maida and 2 tablespoons Semolina (Suji).

10. Mix everything well and make a soft dough.

11. Now add ½ tablespoon baking powder mix it well.

12. Now with the dough make small 8-7 round balls.

13. Now in a pan take 55-gram oil/ghee heat it and make sure that the temperature of oil or ghee should not be high otherwise balls will burn from outside and will not be fried properly from inside.

14. Now add balls in it fry it properly on low flame till it became golden brown.

15. When they fried well take them out in a napkin and let them cool for some time.

16. Now add the jamuns in a hot sugar syrup make sure the syrup is hot for the good texture of jamuns.

17. Put and soak jamuns in the syrup for 1-2 hours before serving. You will notice the size of the jamuns will increase than the original one.

18. Serve the jamuns either warm or chilled.

19. You can also garnish gulab jamun with either nuts or shredded(chopped) coconut.
